The first month of the year is over and here are my mini reviews for books I read in January 2019 (plus one from last month that I finished after making my mini review post.)
Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik| ★★★☆☆ (3.5 Stars)
“You were challenged beyond the bounds of what could be done, and found a path to make it true.”
Not you might see this rating and think I didn’t enjoy this book and I’d have to tell you that you are wrong. The only reason the rating is so low is because I was so bored for the first ⅓ or the story and I seriously considered DNF-ing it, but the knowledge that so many blogger friends loved this motivated me to continue and I ended up really enjoying the last part of the book . Spinning Silver tells the unexpectedly interconnected story of 3 women, and how each one is trying to find agency and power. Though it has a slower start it was an empowering story of friendship, determination, and demanding respect. I feel like each of the girl’s storylines really lifted another up and made the world seem all the more real I’ll definitely be reading more from Naomi Novik in the future.
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt |★★★★☆ (4.5 Stars)
“Don’t be afraid of death; be afraid of an unlived life. You don’t have to live forever, you just have to live.”
I don’t know if it can count as a reread if I don’t really remember much of it from the first time. What I do remember is that Tuck Everlasting is one of the earliest books I remember reading on my own. It’s such a magical world that feels new, big, and full of promise. The book puts you at ease, yet somehow you’re excited for this grand new adventure. It’s just such a wonderfully moving and surprisingly thought provoking book for being a children’s story. The story really leaves your at peace and this yearning to live a full life. Such a bittersweet feel-good story that’s perfect to pick up in one sitting.
All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover |★★★★☆
“If you only shine light on your flaws, all your perfects will dim.”
This is one of those books that you quietly whisper “no” to because it hurts to much to read at times. This was such a hard, but satisfying read – and I cried a whole lot, no surprise. Quinn and Graham’s relationship is far from perfect, but it was oh so real and incredibly easy to become invested in. This entire story was just so easy to fall into because the emotional weight of the story is there. It’s complex, messy, and not clearly defined – but so is love and All Your Perfects was a gut wrenching story that I’m sure will resonate with many people.
Weirdly enough, all of these are audiobooks! But I’m hoping to get even more into audiobooks this year after falling in love with them in 2018!
