More mini reviews from books I’ve enjoyed to varying degrees over the last few weeks.
Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead by Elle Cosimano
Rating: ★★★★☆
Release Date: February 1, 2022
What a fun series, I love that the story is so meta – with Finlay’s book paralleling her present situation perfectly. I was honestly expecting a bit more of a romance focus in this book, but it was well balanced and I really enjoyed both the romance and the mystery plots. The mysteries in the story really carried over from book 1 and felt like a perfect bridge to bigger and crazier stories coming up next.

One Night on the Island by Josie Silver
Rating: ★★☆☆☆ (DNF @40%)
Release Date: February 15, 2022
This wasn’t really bad. I sat down to read and got almost halfway through it no time at all. Unfortunately, just because this was easy to read doesn’t mean I enjoyed it. I was so utterly bored while reading this, I feel like everything immediately left my head as soon as I read it. I stopped reading this only a few hours ago and I can’t even tell you both characters names. Both Cleo and Mac (I had to look up his name) were blah characters. Cleo annoyed me in the beginning because she was so focused on turning 30 and being single, and even though she did have some personal reasons to feel weird about her upcoming birthday, I didn’t love it. And while I initially liked Mac’s chapters, the more I got to know his situation, I just didn’t care for the slow decay of his current marriage. Once I got to their romantic interaction, I knew I had to stop because I felt nothing and I wouldn’t be fair to the book because my enjoyment was only going down. And while the setting was dreary and perfect for a winter day, the story was not.

Good Girl Complex by Elle Kennedy
Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.5 Stars)
Release Date: February 1, 2022
I love Elle Kennedy’s writing. It’s so easy for me to get into and get swept up in the story. This was a fun and fast romance between a rich girl with a strong drive and a townie boy looking to get a little payback. The story doesn’t try to surprise you, and you know exactly what’s going to happening from the beginning, but it’s still an enjoyable ride and I thought Cooper and Mac have solid chemistry and I really enjoyed the supporting cast.

Made in Manhattan by Lauren Layne
Rating: ★★★★☆
Release Date: January 18, 2022
This was a really well done fish-out-of-water, makeover story. I love that’s its a gender flipped Pygmalion retelling – but the characters here are so well realized. They felt like full people for the whole story, and while they do go on a journey and I loved the development. I’m surprised at how much I loved where they started too. The chemistry was on point and I flew through the story. If you’re looking for a quick and satisfying read, look no further.
