More mini reviews from books I’ve enjoyed to varying degrees over the last few weeks.
The Bodyguard by Katherine Center
Rating: ★★★★☆
Release Date: July 19, 2022
Really cute, charming, and funny romcom with some good action and flirty banter. I love that we had a story focusing on a female bodyguard – it was such a unique premise and I loved seeing Hannah’s knowledge and capabilities showcased throughout the story. The situations are over-the-top and ridiculous and that’s what made this such a fun read. Combined with some of my favorite tropes – fake dating, bodyguard romance, only one bed, slow burn romance – this was a definite win for me. It was so easy to picture Hannah and Jack growing closer and catching feelings. What a perfect summer read.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
A Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight
Rating: ★★★★☆
Release Date: May 5, 2020
I liked this. Very engaging. Good reveals to keep you guessing and trying to piece together the clues alongside Lizzie. I’d also highly recommend the audiobook. I loved how we got the plot information from a few different mediums – Lizzie researching and talking with Zach about his wife’s murder, and through court proceedings and testimonies. I loved a courtroom mystery, – it’s so fun to really follow along and try to piece the story together along with the characters. This one definitely kept me guessing.
Set on You by Amy Lea
Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.5 Stars)
Release Date: May 10, 2022
This is a book that makes you smile, and honestly what more could I want right now. I loved seeing a Crystal Shen, curvy fitness influencer, finding love and a (short term) gym nemesis with firefighter Scott. Crystal and Scott had a really cute relationship and excellent flirty banter with lots of playful ribbing and bonding over cheesy pickup lines. They felt like such a genuine couple. I loved how internet/troll culture was handled in the story as well and showcasing the positive and negative sides of the body positivity movement.
Hook Shot by Kennedy Ryan
Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.75 Stars)
Release Date: March 26, 2019
Another win from Kennedy Ryan. I was so happy to finally get Kenan and Lo’s story and I really enjoyed it. These two have had obvious chemistry from the first time they met and I loved actually seeing their relationship develop and them grow closer. I was expecting to see more of Simone, especially with this pitched in part as a single parent romance, but we really didn’t see her that much which I honestly didn’t mind because she read more like a 10 year old than a 14 year old and it honestly took me out of the story a bit. Despite my issues, Kenan and Lo had such great development and selflessness in their relationship that I wanted them to be together long before this book and I’m really happy to see their happiness bloom.
