Recent Reads Mini Reviews

More mini reviews from books I’ve enjoyed to varying degrees over the last few weeks.

Misfits Like Us by Krista & Becca Ritchie

Rating: ★★★★☆
Release Date: July 22, 2022

Luna and Donnelly are so uniquely them that their story had to match their personalities. I’m happy to say I enjoyed their bonding over fandoms, shipping, and fics. We’ve seen them interact for books now, so we know some of the history and I liked seeing them and learning more about Donnelly’s family and past.

Would You Rather by Allison Ashley

Rating: ★★★☆☆
Release Date: August 23, 2022

This was a cute and quick friend to lovers romance. You feel the history and chemistry between Noah and Mia, but I wish we got to see more of the interactions. The story uses a lot of mini time jumps that bypass relationship development and moments. I also think the ending was a touch rushed. I still highly recommend this – the clear love and esteem the two hold for each other is evident.

I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher

Rating: ★★★★☆ (3.5 Stars)
Release Date: July 12, 2022

What moves the Dead has the vibes and horror elements you want in an Poe retelling, but much richer discussions about identify that introduce complexities not seen in the original story. While this was scary to me, it was perfectly unsettling – there’s something about nature horror combines with body horror that gets me every time. And while the story is short, it is satisfying and feels complete. (but I can’t say I recommend the audiobook, because while it was a fine listening experience, the narrator was not my favorite)

The One by John Marrs

Rating: ★★★★★
Release Date: July 15, 2016

Well, this was absolutely fabulous. I was engaged from the very beginning and it read so quickly it was hard to put down. We follow quite a few different characters – 5 pairings as they navigate the DNA Match service. I was drawn to different couples at different times so it kept me engaged. And the story was very well plotted – there was twist, and surprises, along with things I could guess so it was fun to read and try and figure out what was going to happen.
