February 2019 Mini Reviews

2019 is getting it’s legs and establishing itse;f as a great reading year for me so far. Even though I had an unplanned break in the middle of the month, I’m still happy with what I read. So, here are my mini reviews for books I read in February 2019

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang |

★★★☆☆ (3.5 Stars)

“How did one not obsess over something wonderful? How did one like something a reasonable amount?”

Okay, first things first. This audiobook has the most bizarre and awful music for the intro and outro chapters. It’s distracting and doesn’t fit the story at all. It sounds like an 80s video game died. Besides that I did have a really fun time with this book. The characters were enjoyable. Though I didn’t fall in love with them individually, Stella and Michael had wonderful chemistry that leapt off the page and seeing their relationship develop was fantastic. I also really liked the family focus we got in the side plots – Michael’s sisters were hilarious and I dearly loved his mom and grandmother. I laughed a lot, sometimes at the story but mostly with it. And I just had a really fun time.

My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren |★★★★☆

“Sometimes, the thing we want is right in front of us, and we’re the last ones to see it.”

I will never not enjoy friends-to-lovers, so it’s really no surprise to me that I enjoyed My Favorite Half-Night Stand. There’s such a genuine friendship at the center of this story, that it was so easy for me to fall for all the characters and the complex and realistic ways their lives intertwine. The writing is filled with witty banter and lighthearted snark that you fly through the story. Millie’s not my favorite character and still needs to do some growing up to get over the girl hate and insecurities that make her a not so empathetic character who deceives her best friends throughout the story. She’s the entire reason a star is gone from my rating. And If I didn’t have such a good experience with the audiobook, it might be lower. But this fast and fun story was just the kind of thing I wanted to read, so I had a really great time.

Be the Girl by K.A. Tucker |★☆☆☆☆ (1.5 Stars)

“Any rose can succumb to rot, given the right conditions. But, with enough attention, it can come back better than before.”

I just didn’t really like this or connect to the characters/relationships at all. This was such a predictable story that I didn’t really get much of an entertainment factor out of it because it was all so formulaic and expected and I couldn’t get invested for the life of me. It was so easy to read that I power read and skimmed parts because it wasn’t bad enough to stop and I didn’t want to feel like I had wasted time on a book that I wasn’t going to finish. The main problem was that it was all just so mediocre – the characters were fine, the relationships were okay. It’s all just forgettable and I can’t be bothered to care about it much either way.
